However, some may argue that it’s "too much tool" for everyday modeling and simple design work. In this session, we’ll be talking about the work we’re doing to bring this vision to life, and help you understand how to make the most of Generative Design in Fusion 360.

Sketching, massing models, final design, animation, and rendering of engineering models—this class will discuss the workflow for using multiple Autodesk products in a production environment. Discover the ins and outs of this workflow, starting with a simple model, moving to using Generative Design in Fusion 360 software for a final model, then shifting to 3ds Max software and Arnold to render the final animation. Explore how Fusion 360 Team software can help manage the workflow files, review the Fusion 360-to-3ds Max import process, and see how to render photo quality images. Learn how to use Physical Materials, the Physical Camera, and adjust the scene exposure to get a good rendering. With the integration of hand sketching into the digital workflow, we are no longer bound to the finite limitations of our tools. Step through an integrated design process, utilizing laptops and iPads in conjunction with SketchBook Pro software, FormIt software, Fusion 360 software, Revit software, and Dynamo visual programming language extension. In this course, learn how to integrate and capitalize on the power of design sketching in fluid conjunction with the Building Information Modeling (BIM) model. Learn how to utilize SketchBook Pro in the IOS/iPad to create initial sketch concept(s) and import into FormIt software as background for underlay and development of design into a 3D massing model. Develop the massing model utilizing cloud-based FormIt software in conjunction with further overlays and sketching in SketchBook Pro on a pen/tablet interface. Utilize FormIt conceptual energy modeling to orient and refine the initial design concept. Using Autodesk 360 cloud-computing platform and Revit Model software within the massing environment, models and concepts are shared with the Production Team and distributed to the contractor/owner teams.

Then come join us for the Dynamo for Software Developers workshop! You’ll learn how to extend Dynamo by using code to develop on top of it. We will teach you when and how to use different development tools to build your own nodes using C# and Python. We will even teach you how to manipulate the Dynamo experience using extensions to build custom UI or interactions. The LS-218 is pushing electric and gasoline-powered motorcycles to be the fastest production bike on the market. But pure performance is not the only goal; Lightning is focused on providing consumers with the best quality and value in every product it creates. Key to meeting these goals and staying ahead of the competition are new technology and ways of thinking. Lightning was an early adopter of generative design. Collaboratively, we produced a part-consolidation and lightweighting workflow that saved 30% of target component mass. In this class, we’ll show you how developments within generative design can be used to gain these benefits, while ensuring cost-effective manufacturing. This talk will cover workflows used within Fusion 360 software, maximizing the integrated simulation, generative design, and manufacturing tools to better understand the part and its performance.

This class will cover how to apply automation and generative design principles to optimize the design of a road network. The design starts from geographic information system (GIS) inputs, describing the site and its features, such as the boundary, existing buildings, and streams of water. Using InfraWorks software and Civil 3D software, it’s possible to create a model to start the definition of the design. Dynamo is used to apply a computational design approach and define modeling strategies to enable optimization. With generative design, it’s possible to explore multiple scenarios and find the best solutions to the problem balancing multiple objectives. Finally, with Dynamo for Civil 3D it’s possible to create complex objects like alignments, profile, and corridors to curate the selected solutions and refine the modeling as needed.

In this session, you’ll get a look at how Generative Design in Fusion 360 software can help you improve the way you design and make engineering decisions. We will review the development progress we made throughout the year, and highlight why those features were key to improving how users can find success with generative design. We'll also look into the future at how we’ll be expanding the types of problems that can easily be solved with Generative Design in Fusion 360.

Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg of Nervous System with discuss the design philosophy and fabrication process used to create their amazing work. Nervous System is a generative design studio that works at the intersection of science, art, and technology. Drawing inspiration from natural phenomena, they create computer simulations to generate designs and use digital fabrication to realize products.

Alias 2019 software comes together with the very special add-in called Dynamo. Dynamo is the computational design platform embedded into Alias and interacting with the geometry created within it. Computational design is a change in the medium of design expression from geometry to logic. It lets designers and engineers create geometry relationships based on rules rather than traditional sculpting/push-pull manipulations. By encoding design rules in a computational framework, it's possible to quickly generate complex, parametric, repetitive geometries, and iterate among different options to determine the best solution. In this class, we will discuss some practical methods of how to model complex patterns like intake, speaker, or front grill. This will include how to deal with the pattern on multiple trimmed surfaces, how to start, and which Dynamo tools to use.

While designing a stadium, the most important thing is to make sure that every one of the seats offers a good, unobstructed view of the whole field. Architects must make sure that they optimize the view and distance from the field while also fitting in the maximum number of seats. This class will describe how to develop a Dynamo script to automate the seating bowl based on your standards, and then show how to use Project Refinery to optimize the arrangement. Further, the class will demonstrate how to export the seating bowl to Revit software, and the data to a data visualization platform like Microsoft Power BI, to visualize your design.

Engineers and designers face an internal struggle when choosing between traditional design methods engrained through years of practice and new Generative Design workflows. Simply applying traditional design methods to Generative Design tools often leads to insufficient results which can be used for inspiration, but are not ready for manufacture. This hands-on lab will bridge the gap between traditional and Generative Design workflows, empowering users to complete the design process by leveraging Generative Design in powerful ways. Attendees will leverage Autodesk Generative Design alongside Meshmixer, Netfabb, Fusion 360, and Nastran to create a finished product, while exploring workflows which greatly improve productivity.

With the announcement of Autodesk Generative Design, we take one of the most common structural engineering problems and turn it on its head. This class will teach you how to use AGD to discover unthought-of designs for a structural aerospace bracket. Learn how to go from seed geometry definition in Fusion 360, to problem definition, design generation, and results exploration in Autodesk Generative Design. Select from generated designs of different materials, safety factors and build constraints. Next, we use detailed non-linear finite element analysis in Fusion 360 to verify the selected Generative Design solution. Learn how to input non-linear properties for AM metals and correctly interpret finite element results. Once verified we will discuss AM (metal powder bed) build preparation with the help of Autodesk NetFabb. Finally, we will compare the performance of our new Generatively Designed bracket with that of the baseline (subtractive manufactured) bracket by physically breaking both of them!

This instructional demo will cover basics of the Autodesk Generative Design software. We will demonstrate the steps needed to get your data loaded, constraints added and objectives set. After that, we will then show what definitions are required to process the information and how easy and informative it is to view the computed results. Sample parts will be used for the demo and shown for reference. Other topics will include subscription information, technical specifications and more. Only released Autodesk software made available to the public will be demonstrated.

In this discussion, I will be so bold as to make predictions as to where I believe our industry is going in the next 3 to 10 years. With advancements in generative design, software algorithms, and robotic construction, our current processes are going to be changing quite a bit. We will see more and more done by computers and machines than we have ever seen. Rather than Building Information Modeling (BIM), we are going to see Building Information Optimization. In contrast, rather than manually drawing walls, doors, and columns for what we think is a good design, we will feed the computer "rules" instructing it to give us a building’s optimal footprint, structural load capacity, and thermal performance. Things that took months will be done in a day. What does this mean for you? How do you play a part in this changing process? Come to find out how.
